Effie was only about 4 feet 10 inches tall. One time her and Richard (who was about 6 foot tall) got into an argument and she broke a beer bottle over his head. When they went to court, the judge asked about his head and he told the judge that Effie hit him with a beer bottle. When the judge asked her if it was true, she said yes and she would do it again if he came back home.

Notes for EDWARD JAMES WAGNER:
Edward James "Junie" was on the USS Quincy in Guadacanal in the Solomon Islands during WWII and his ship, the Quincy, was torpedoed and went down and he was lost at sea. He was 20 years of age at the time.
Maura, the daughter of a survivor of the USS Quincy related this to Mildred Hepp Jenkins - l2-2000 - concerning a reunion of the survivors of the Quincy.
"The James Wagner my dad found was on the USS Quincy and was listed as KIA at the battle of Savo Island. My dad was on the USS Quincy when it was hit by the Japanese at the battle of Savo Island. He watched the ship sink behind him, along with many of his comrads and was in the water for 6 hours before being rescued. He is a survivor. He was 22 years old at the time. The reunion is primarily those who served pre-war and survivors of the USS Quincy, although there are very few crew members still alive. Families of crew members attend as well to stay connected or to gather information about their loved one."
Addition information from Maura on talking with her dad -
"There was an Edward James Wagner, SEA2, listed as KIA on page l68 in the book titled "History of the USS Quincy CA-39" by Commander Grady Messimer, Jr. USN (Retired). The book does not have a complete list of all of the crew, but it does list those killed in action. My dad stated that the USN would telegraph the next of kin and let them know of their missing family member. He was pretty certain that the USN would not issue a death certificate."
"My father, Daniel, said his best guess is that Edward served as a seaman second class (SEA2). He was most likely assigned to a deck division, possibly have been assigned as an ammunition handler for these anti-aircraft guns.

Albert would not give out his pennies. He would say if he had two pennies left, all he would have to do is add three more pennies and then he would have a nickel.
Albert made Della go to the water hydrant one day and bring him a bucket of water. She had to carry it for 3 blocks. He kicked her butt all the way to the hydrant and back because she didn't want to carry it for three blocks. Della was 10 years old. One of the neighbors saw him and told their mother, and O'Della told him "You don't touch any one of these little children any more. They don't have to wait on you and they don't have to carry your water. If you want water get your own."

Goldie and I used to fight all the time, we used to pull each others hair. Goldie bit me one day on the back of my hand. I screamed and Mom ran to the back door. When mom saw my hand she pulled Goldie into the house and spanked her. Mom would not let us hit each other after that. One day I got mad at Goldie and bit my own hand and told Mom that Goldie had bite me again, and Goldie got another spanking. It worked so well that I used it more than once.

The Chinese Republic was proclaimed after the revolution overthrew the Manchu dynasty. Sun-Yat-sen was named president, Francisco Madera replaced Porfirio Diaz, president since 1877. Roald Amundsen became the first man to reach the South Pole. The first feature film was released when the two reels of D.W. Griffith's Enoch Arden were screened together. The British physicist, Ernest Rutherford discovered the structure of an atom. And Madam Curie was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for discovery of elements radium and polonium.
She was called Nanny by everyone in her family whether she was their grandmother or not, even her own children called her Nanny.

Seems Mother and Alma Leonhardt, Mother's lst cousin, worked at Perot and Stockers (?). One day Alma asked Mother if she wanted to run away with her to Texas to find a cowboy and get married. Mother said she did but she told Alma that she was only 16 and Alma was 18 and if she ran away, they would find her and bring her back to grandma and grandma would beat her to death. Mother told Alma that if she would wait for two years until she was 18, she would go with her then. But, two years later when she was 18, Alma was married and had a child and couldn't go. Alma was married to Charles Faulkner at that time and the child she had was Charles Faulkner, Jr.
