Notes for MILDRED LOUISE HEPP:

Mildred was born at 8:58 p.m. on a Sunday.

In 1939 when Mildred was born, World War II began when Germany invaded Poland and annexed Danzig; Britain and France gave Hitler ultimatum (Sept 1), declare war (Sept. 3). Disabled German pocket battleship Admiral Graft Spee blown up off Montevideo, Uruguay, on Hitler's orders (Dec. 17). Limited activity ("Sitzkreig) on Western Front. Germany renounced a pact with England. It also concluded a 10-year non-aggression pact with USSR. Russo-Finnish War began; Finns lost one-tenth of its territory in 1940 peace treaty. As World War II began, Roosevelt submitted $1,319-million defense budget, proclaimed U.S. neutrality, and declared limited emergency; New York World's Fair opens. The Daughters of the American Revolution refused to allow Marian Anderson to perform at Constitution Hall in Washington, D. C. The big-screen adaptation of "Gone With the Wind" premiered, and went on to gross $192 million, making it one of the most profitable films of all times. It was also one of the longest films, clocking in at 231 minutes. Robert Kane introduced the Batman cartoon. Albert Einstein wrote a letter to President Roosevelt regarding the possibiity of using uranium to initiate a nuclear chain reaction, the fundamental process behind the atomic bomb.

Mildred June 2000:

The old neighborhood has changed. Some of the old streets are gone. The l937 flood in Louisville washed away most of the houses and people just never built back in the same area. That's when they scattered all around town. Even the street I grew up on has a gate across it now and there are some businesses backs there. I think they are making a waterfront park out of the area now. The waterfront park starts in downtown Louisville and spans out to about a mile or two along the river. They moved River Road one block over. There is nothing but trees along that part of River Road; the houses are long gone, everyone of them.

But people like Margie Morgan, my mother and I, remember the houses and where they lived. It is sad to see some thing change like that when that is where you grew up and had fond memories of it. I feel like I lost a part of me. It's gone forever.

E-mail to Mildred Hepp Jenkins from Richard Faulkner of Bowling Green, KY, April, 2001

I really enjoy hearing someone else talk about the places I am so familiar with. And getting more clues all the time is neat.

As far as I can tell, Charles, Jr. (Chuck) and dad fell out when Chuck spent some time in jail. He was in the Marines during and shortly after Korea. He got mixed up with some judge's 15 yr. old daughter, and spent 18 months in jail. I don't know why, but he just did not get along with dad.

Let me fill you in on MY childhood and maybe this will make some more sense (to both of us, I hope). Daddy was a tough man. He literally was on his own since being a child and always had a tough time trusting anyone. We all knew that he had some real demons in his past and did not ask too many questions. Dad was all about work. And we, his kids, learned about work early in life.

Dad retired from Klarer Packing on Story Ave. in 1970, to build his own packing plant. With the help of his children, (I was nine, and my oldest brother was 18). We built a business out of a hillside in Bullitt Co. We all worked before and after school and had little time for play. Dad always pulled the "family responsibility" guilt trip on any of us when we balked, or wanted to play ball in the summer. Chuck, he said, didn't come to us "because he knows that to come around here, he would be expected to work, and he is lazy". As I got older, I realized that very few people worked as hard as my family, and there must be another reason. Once I got older and moved from home, I spent more time with Chuck, and found out that he was a lot like dad, only quieter. Same sense of humor, same love for "horse trading" (Chuch was a flea market regular). As I got older I am full or regret sometimes, that I didn't get more of the full story of just what happened.

Dad quite school in the fifth grade, but talked of skipping school to fish off the pilings under the K&I bridge. BeeBee Collett was the mother of Bob Collett, who ran an auto wrecker service on Adams Street. Do the names Jake Koch Packing, or Dawsons & Baker packing mean anything to you? How about Billy Jones or Bill Dryden? These were all men who ran packing houses around that area when I was a kid. I got to go with Dad when he went to Louisville to get meat. We would go to Heimendingers at 2nd & Market to get knives and cleavers sharpened (also to White Castle, if he was in a good mood). We also made regular trips to Goodman and Tasman on Market to sell beef hides, bought tarps and a WWI helmet from Hyman Debrovy's Tent and Tarp. We bought wrapping paper and tape from Burwinkle and Hendershot, and I drank my first mixed drink at Hillside Manor next to Fischers. (I bet I know your uncle's name...dad knew every knifeman in town.)

I cannot remember if he ever mentioned his mother's name. I think she was really mentally ill. She had a husband after dad's dad left. His name was Hugh Metcalf. I remember dad talking about how he would jump under things when he heard a loud noise (a result of WWI shell shock). I know Dad was really angry about being thrown out. He always said that his mother let his sister, Mary Lee, stay because she was 18 and had a good job at the TB Hospital in Shively (Later Waverly Hills). I remember Dad talking about swimming at 6 Mile Island and a good friend drowning there. Catching a big fish in flood backwaters with a pitchfork, and it dragging the ground behind him with its head on his shoulder. I remember them talking about "cooning" for fish in Beargrass Creek, and talking about watching the men build the fence around Cave Hill Cemetery. ("Never could figure out why they needed a fence, nobody wants in there, and damn sure nobody in there is going anywhere").

Millie, I hope I haven't bored you to tears. I have a million bits and pieces of the man who taught me how-and how not to be a man and a parent. I loved him dearly, mistakes and all, and I guess all these little bits need to be looked at, like the pieces of a big ole jigsaw puzzle. I would have loved to live near the Point. I love the river and the stories of the Low Dutch who lived beside it.

Reply E-mail to Richard from Mildred - April 2001

Most of the names you mentioned do not sound familiar, except for Bob Collett. Seems he now runs a car dealership in Louisville or if he has died, maybe someone is running it for him. Anyway, that name sounds familiar.

One name I do remember - 2nd & Market St. - White Castle. Wish I had a nickle for every time Mother went downtown and took us to White Castle at 2nd & Market and also went to Sears and White Castle at 8th & Broadway. These are some of my good memories.

There was something on TV the other night about the Old Waverly Hills. They want to turn it into something. After Waverly Hills Sanitarium closed, another medical facility moved into it (believe it was called Hazelwood Medical Facility or something like that) and evidently they closed and moved out a few years ago and now they want to do something else with it. Haven't heard any more about it for a few weeks. My Aunt Ruth Hepp died there in 1946, can remember going to see her one Sunday afternoon, and then the next day she died of TB. I was just a kid then, about 7.

Do you remember the old Haymarket on Jefferson Street? Mother would take me up there to buy fresh vegetables from their stands and fish at Fultons. I used to look at those ole women, dressed in long dresses and scarves tired around their heads. They fascinated me. Today, I would have been scared to death of them.

So, you never lived on the Point. I didn't know how important it was to me until I started my family research. Living these old memories seems to mean more to me now than ever before. Even though I never knew most of these people that I research, I seem connected to them because I did live where they once lived. And, I am thankful for that.

I never swam at 6-Mile Island. What I used to do was - on Sunday afternoon Daddy would walk my brother and I down to the harbor at the foot of Ohio Street; we would walk out on the harbor and look at the boats. Mother seldom would go with us. She hated that ole river. She said it washed her out of a home too many times on the Point. She was there in the 1937 flood, lost everything. We still lived up there in the 1945 flood, and I know what she is talking about. I remember moving everything we had up a flight of stairs in case the flood waters got into the lower level of the house. It didn't, but then we had to bring everything back down those stairs.

Almost forgot, my uncle who worked at Fischers was Charles Daniel Hepp, known as "Bud" or "Heppy". Does the name Hepp sound familiar, that is my maiden name.

E-mail from Richard Faulkner - April 2001

Good morning and I hope you are enjoying Easter. It is halfway sunny and warm in Bowling Green. They said it was supposed to storm. We did get a bit of rain, but not much. Today I talked to my sister in Somerset and tried to get some information about these guys. I know that she talked to Mom a lot about family stuff and maybe, knows more about Dad's family. I sure would like to hear more about them all.

Yes, I remember the Haymarket in its old version. Dad loved vegetables and especially fruit. We would go every time we went to town from Shepherdsville and buy apples, plums and things to resell in the shop. I remember Fultons fish market, and Tommy Thompsons. Somewhere around 1975 it changed.

I know what you mean about the old women with their scarves around their heads. One thing I have learned from living all around the country. We were not afraid when we were kids....just curious. I have found most of the people who seem strange to us now are just the same as the ones we remember, only from different places. Back then they were mostly white, and came from Germany, Ireland, and Eastern Europe. Nowadays they seem to be from India, Mexico and South America, or the former Soviet Union. Scary at times, because they look and act so different. But like back then, MOST are honest folks just trying to do better for themselves and families. Sure there always have been crooks, even then. I just think the "bad guys" get way too much attention now, and it leads us to the false believe that evil is everywhere.

One of my favorite times to go to the Haymarket was Christmas time. They had candy in big cardboard boxes that you would sample, and usually the vendor would ask, "do you have any brothers or sisters at home?" "Yes" I would reply, "take a sample for them, too". Usually his eyes got big when I took FOUR pieces.

I remember going to Sears on Broadway. My parents believed Sears was the place to go to buy most everything, and we went there often. There was a White Castle nearby, and a Green Stamps store where you could get things in exchange for stamps. Remember that? I remember Sears having a "fallout shelter" in the basement, and a "colored" drinking fountain.

Here's a story - My dad was never a "fan" of any sport. He liked music, but probably never bought a record of anyone. As far as I know, he liked boxing but never saw a live match. But then there was the circus. My dad would buy circus tickets every time the circus came to town. I remember going to at least three a year, and learning about the performers. Dad knew them all. Sometimes he would slip a few bucks to the backstage person and we would go and meet some of them. My heroes were not sports figures when I was a kid. Much more exciting than that. I knew all the clowns, tiger trainers and trapeze artists. I met the Flying Wallendas and Jojo the Dog Faced Boy (he was a man with a very, very heavy beard, but I was not disappointed.)

We never thought that Dad's love for the circus was strange. After Dad died I was talking to Mom about our childhood, and I asked her about it. She said Dad had a brother, Chester, and when they were kids, they would help the circus workers unload the train and parade to the place where they would perform. I never saw a circus parade but I can imagine the elephants and horses pulling the cages of wild animals and then pulling the tents up. Dad's brother said, "when the train leaves Louisville, I am going to be on it", and according to Mom, he was. The last time Dad saw his brother was waving from the back of that train, and he looked for him in every circus he could.

Mom worked at Thompson's restaurant in Louisville. I cannot remember when that was, but she was from Hartford, KY in Ohio Co. She rode the train to Louisville and lived with her married sister until she and Dad married.

Do you remember Muth's Candy Store? Made their own licorice...and Springerle cookies... I would love a Springerle.

Notes for ALFONSO DALE DEPREZ:

Midlred Hepp Deprez Jenkins:

When Dale and I met, he was in the US Army, had just come back from Korea and on returning from Korea was stationed at Ft. Knox, KY. We married March 12, 1960. He was discharged from the military in October 1960 and took a job with a service station in Louisville, KY always looking for something better. He heard of a job at Pepsi Cola Co. as Route-salesman, which he held for a few years. Then took a job with Frito-Lay Co. but having to get in and out of the truck so much, it took its toll on his legs. He had to give up that job and went to work for Ford Motor Co. on Grade Lane in Louisville, KY. He was first hired as Utility doing odd jobs around the plant. When the new Ford Kentucky Truck plant was being built, he went out there with the engineers and helped set up the new plant. He stayed with Ford for at least 30 years, retiring sometime around the 1990's. He now is remarried and lives in Bronston, KY.

FRANK ROBERT "SONNY" HEPP, JR. (DELLA LEONA5 ALCORN, O'DELLA KATHERYN4 SHIELDS, JOHN HENRY3, HARRISON BAKER2, WILLIAM1) was born March 15, 1941 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. He married (1) SHARON MAY HUMPHREY 1961 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY, daughter of ALVIN HUMPHREY and NORA MARTIN. She was born September 14, 1943 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. He met (2) MARY BYRN November 01, 1978 in Clarksville, Clark Co., IN, daughter of HUGH BYRN and MARGARET SCHLER. She was born February 12, 1945 in Harrison Co., IN.

Notes for FRANK ROBERT "SONNY" HEPP, JR.:

In 1941, when Sonny was born, Germany attacked the Balkans and Russia. On Dec. 7, 1941, while negotiations were going on with Japanese representatives in Washington, Japanese carrier-based planes swept in without warning over Oahu and attacked (7:55 a.m. local time) the bulk of the U.S. Pacific fleet, moored in Pearl Harbor. Nineteen naval vessels, including eight battleships were sunk or severely damaged; 188 U.S. aircraft were dstroyed. Military casualities were 2,280 killed and 1,109 wounded; 68 civilians were also killed. On Dec. 8, the United States declared War on Japan. Britain also declared war on Japan. In his message to Congress proposing lend-lease legislation (Jan. 6, 1941), President Franklin Delano Roosevelt stated that Four Freedoms should prevail everywhere in the world--freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. These were substantially incorporated in the Atlantic Charter. Congress passes the Lend-Lease Act, giving the President the power to sell, lend, and lease war supplies to other nations. In Citizen Kane, Orson Welles subordinated all previous technological and cinematic accomplishments to his own essentially cinematic vision. Using newly developed film stocks and a wider, faster lens, Welles pushed the boundaries of montage and mise-en-scene, as well as sound, redefining the medium. And RCA demonstrates a new simplified electron microscope that magnifies up to 100,000 times.

He married (3) CARMON ROSE BULKLEY July 11, 1998 in Bloomington Monroe Co., IN, daughter of FRANCIS BULKLEY and ROSE BARBOUR. She was born November 18, 1954 in Newcastle, WY.

Notes for DONALD LEE HEPP:

Even though we had been together for seven years, and three years ago we were going to get married, then decided not to, it was all a surprise and done quickly. Three years ago, Donnie took me out to dinner for my birthday, and invited everyone we worked with to join us. It was to be a birthday party, or so I thought.

Right after we all ordered our drinks, he got down on one knee in the middle of the restaurant and asked me to marry him. I found out then that everyone we worked with had known he was planning to do this and had known for almost a week. He asked me in public and in front of all our friends because he was afraid I would say no, and, in fact, if he had not, I would have said no. Marriage was not in my future at that time.

I said yes because I did not want to embarrass him but told everyone that the engagement would be a long one. He had still been in love with his ex-wife right up to the time that he asked me to marry him and I wanted to make sure that this was not a spur of the moment thing. About a year later I brought up the subject of setting a date; we almost split up and I did move out and found my own place.

He told me later that he realized he was going through a mid-life crisis. Even though he had asked me to marry him, when his ex-wife told him she was going to get remarried, it threw him. He said he just went through some weird thinking and needed to be alone for a while. I moved out and was convinced that we would end up going our separate ways.

But every few weeks he would come over and asked me out to dinner, or to a movie, or just to come over to his place to watch TV. That went on for a year and a half.

Right after Christmas 1998, he asked me when was I going to move back in with him and I told him that we had already had that conversation and it almost broke us up. I told him that we were getting along just fine the way things were why mess them up. Around Valentines Day he asked me to marry him. I told him again that we had already had this conversation and why did he think the outcome would be different this time. He looked at me real serious and said, "Because I really love you and the only way I can prove it to you is to marry you." Well, to say the least my heart melted and we sat down and talked. I guess I thought it would be a lot like last time so when he started pressing me to set a date, I was not really thinking any time that year. Around March, he said he wanted to get married in June or July and he started making plans.

I have to say that he wanted this marriage a lot more than I did. He said that I stuck with him during one of the worst times of his life, during a time when he did not even really like himself, and when he got his head back on straight, he realized that he loved me more than he thought he would ever love anyone again.

Marriage Notes for DONALD HEPP and LINDA BERLEW:

Donnie and Linda got married in the same place as his sister Mildred and her second husband Howard Jenkins. Donnie and Linda were the witnesses to Mildred and Howard and then Mildred and Howard were the witnesses to Donnie and Linda.

Notes for CARMON ROSE BULKLEY:

Newcastle, WY, is located on the Western edge of the Black Hills, with the Shortgrass Prairie of The High Plains to the Southwest.

In 1954, when Carmon was born, the US launched their nuclear powered submarine, the "Nautilus". Tennessee Williams wrote "Cat on the Hot Tim Roof". Race segregation in schools was declared unconstitutional. Laos and Cambodia gained their independence. Col. Nasser seized power in Egypt. The French War in Indochina came to an end. But the French War in Algiers started as Algiers, Tunisia and Morocco, struggle for independence. Over 500,00 French soldiers served in Algiers from 1954 to 1962.

By the time she graduated from High School, she had lived and gone to school in every one of the western states except New Mexico. She graduated in 3 1/2 years and even with graduating early, she went to 5 different High Schools. Freshmen and Sophomore years in Kingman, AZ, Junior year in Sioux Falls, SD and Galva, IA, Senior year in Paonia, CO and Coarse Gold, CA. After getting out of school she joined the Air Force and went to Texas. After training and school, she was stationed in Wichita, KS. She lived there for 10 years and then moved to Bloomington, IN.

That is where she is now. She is putting down roots, and will probably be here until they plant her.

The Rev. John Hall of Atlanta, GA performed the ceremony which united the couple in the holy bonds of matrimony. In keeping with the theme of the things, he wore a casual shirt and slacks.

The ceremony took place on a calm day with only a gentle breeze blowing and not a cloud in the sky. The ceremony was held in Cascades Park with a small brook quietly running along side. The couple stood in front of a three dimensional arch. The wedding song, "When a Man Loves a Woman" was played just before the ceremony started.

The bride who was given in marriage by her mother wore a red cotton button down top, white cotton slacks with blue silk flowers in her hair. She also carried out the tradition of something old, new, borrowed and blue. She carried a bouquet of red, white and blue silk flowers. All the flowers for the wedding was made by hand by the matron-of-honor's mother. Also standing up for the bride were her daughters, Misti Dawn Volk and Molli Dian Volk.

Robert Feazell of Bloomington, served as best man. He wore a blue tee shirt and blue jeans and sneakers.

The bride's mother wore a white button down shirt and blue jeans. The bridegroom's mother wore a matching blue top and slacks.

A barbecue was held in the park immediately following the ceremony. The two tiered wedding cake, which was baked and decorated by Joan Manning, friend of both the bride and groom, was decorated with real orchard blooms sat in the center of the table. The bride and groom toasted each other with Sparkling Grape Juice.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

We know that Mike was doing a wheelie down the road when a pickup pulled out from a side street from right to left across in front of him. The driver thought that he had time to get across the street. The driver said he was about 1/2 way across the intersection when he realized that he was not going to make it and then he tried to speed up in order to get out of the way, and for a second, thought that he had succeeded. Then he heard and felt the "thud". Mike was not wearing a helmet, but the police said his injuries were to the extent that it would not have mattered one way or the other. One witness at the scene was reported to have said about the injuries "that he had not seen anything like it since Vietnam". He was pronounced dead about one hour later, but the police at the scene said he "felt that Mike died at the scene, but the paramedics did all they could to revive him." I was not up to staying and listening to all of the details but I did hear them say that his chest was crushed. About 200 people came to the funeral, about 150 of them were Mike's friends. We knew he was special to us, but we did not know how special he was to so many other people. Mike is buried in the same cemetery as the rest of his family, and he is about 10 feet from his grandfather, Frank Hepp Sr. We know that his spirit is happy and free. The headstone has been ordered but at this time all I know for sure that will be on it is his name and dates, a cameo of him - and a motorcycle.

His Aunt Mildred tells: When Mike was about 2 years old and she was baby-sitting him. The show of CHiPs came on TV and Mike sat up on the couch and put his hands out in front of him and made the motion of turning the handles to speed up and making the sounds of a engine reving up. He was truly "born to ride".

His sister Michelle tells: When Mike & I were younger we fought over who was going to sleep on the top bunk of his bed, we would wait for mom & dad to go to sleep so we could climb out his bedroom window, then we would go to our friend's house or just run the street till morning, then climb back in the window & play like we were asleep, we never got caught. As Mike & I got older we got a lot closer. We had some of the same friends, we all would go to Devil's Hill and jump ramps with our bikes. Mike & I would go to all night skates together. We also loved to stay with Nanny & Papaw so we could stay up all night and play cards or Yahtzee, all most every time Mike rolled for Papaw he would Yahtzee, I got mad some times. Mike kind of saw me as a big brother because I would play ball with him, climb tree's, race on bike's, play with hot wheels & I didn't let anyone mess with my brother. If they did I would beat them up. As he got bigger he could take care of himself, but I was still the big sister even if he was taller then me. He used to call me his little shrimp sister. I love my brother a lot & always will...
