Thornton B. Shields was born February 14, 1850 in KY, son of Levi Shields and Miss Hornback of KY. He was a farmer and a widower. Thornton died December 7, 1921 in Harrison Co., KY, at the age of 71 yrs., 10 mos and 23 days. Cause of death - natural cause. Man died almost instantainously, probably apoplexy. He was buried in Beaver Baptist (probably church yard) in Cynthiana, KY. Informant was J. B. Whitaker of RFD 3, Cynthiana, KY.

Notes from Shirley Shields:

Thornton Baker Shields is listed on the 1860 census as 9 yrs. old, born in KY and living with Dennis and Margaret Murphy.

In 1870, he is living with the Samuel Trigg family in Nicholas Co. He is listed as 17 yrs. old and attending school.

He married Evangeline Geoghegan, October 25, 1872, in Harrison Co., KY. On his marriage certificate, he states that his parents were both born in IN. There is a good possibility that Thornton did not know where his parents were born. When I first started researching him, I was told that he was a "mountain man", whatever that means. I was also told that he was an orphan, raised by other people. I took that to mean that they were not related to him.

Thornton and Evangeline were the parents of eleven children, seven girls and four boys. They lived for a few years in Mason Co., KY, then they returned to Harrison Co.

He died December 7, 1921, in Harrison Co., KY, at the home of his daughter, Maggie Whiteaker. He is buried at Beaver Baptist Church. His death cert. states he was born February 14, 1850, the son of Levi and Miss Hornback, both parents b. in KY. The obituary gives his parents as Levi and Anna Hornback Shields. The information for the death certificate and the obituary would have been given by his children, probably from stories told to them by their father.

Notes From Steve Shields:

  • E-mail to Mildred Hepp - March 2005 - on occupation of stonework bed rubber:

  • "Tends machine that grinds rough-sawed stone blocks or slabs to smooth surface and specified finish. Positions designated surface of stone on machine bed (rotating circular metal plate), using electric hoist. Dumps abrasive, such as grit, sand and steel shot into hopper of machine. Starts machine, turns valves, and opens hopper gates to regulate flow of water and abrasive udner stone. Measures block or slab to verify thickness with work order specifications. Removes finished stone from rubbing bed and cleans abrasive from surface, using scraper, brush and water hose. May place lead or stone weights on block to ensure even abrading of stone."

  • "Interesting that there is stone mason work and background on both branches of our family. (Steve is referring to John Henry Shields as being a stonemason). Sounds like you have done a lot of work and research on your history. Ours, so far, does not have the distinguished personalities you have been able to find in yours. (Steve is now referring to Mildred's ancestors of the Breckenridges and Alcorns). He also states - "I would just love to find out where in Ireland they came from so I could have a good excuse to visit there."

  • Della Hepp Mar, 2000

  • My mother was religious. Every sunrise morning we went to church all dressed up in our Easter best. Every one would tell her how nice we looked all dressed up. We only got new shoes twice a year, on Easter and Christmas. She liked to cook, she could not read or write, but she could count money down to the penny. She would make shoe-peg corn just for the kids.

  • Mildred Jenkins Mar 2000

  • When I was about 5 or 6 years old, we would go to grandma's about once a month and help her clean her house, my job was to clean all the what-nots. One day she was up and cooked a meal, the next time I went up to see her she was in a wheelchair. I didn't understand what had happened to her. (She'd had a stroke, and lived for 20 years in that wheelchair)

Notes for ALBERT ALCORN:

  • Della Hepp April 2000, as told to Mildred Hepp Jenkins, daughter of Della:

  • When Albert was about l3 years old, he was working at a place that had a big crane like what was used to pick up logs. He climbed up on the dirt pile, the crane swung over and hit him. I don't know how bad he was hurt. He evidently lived in Louisville at the time. They heard from the company and they were going to settle with him. Aunt Effie was very, very young. Grandma wrapped Aunt Effie in a blanket as it was cold outside. They got into the wagon and had to go to Columbus, OH to collect the money.

  • They got as far as Aunt Annie and Uncle Dave's house. Both Annie and Dave and been drinking and Dave threatened to kill Annie. Annie begged grandma not to leave as she was scared he would kill her. So grandma and grandpa stayed there for a while and never did get to Columbus to collect the money. They just got back in the wagon and headed home.

  • Mildren Jenkins April 2000:

  • Mother and Daddy went up to see grandpa at home one night, daddy thought he looked really sick. Daddy picked him up and carried him to the car and took him to the hospital where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. He was in there about a week, they said he was teasing and flirting with the nurses. He was getting over his pneumonia okay and doctor said he could go home in the morning. However, sometime during the night he suffered a stroke and died before he ever got to come home again. I remember that like it was yesterday.

Notes for KATHERYN MARIE ALCORN:

  • Della Hepp Mar, 2000

  • At night I would slip out and meet my first husband, I did this for five years before we got marred. I would take Esther with me because she would not tell on me. Katy would, she used to be a little tattle tail. When I would tell Mom I was going to the park, Katie would ask if she could go with me I would tell her no, but Mom made me take her with me. So I would go to the park, but she didn't go, then I would go and meet my boyfriend. I ended up marrying him. Katie and Freddie would come to my house each year, from California, in March or April and stay for a week or so. One year it snowed about 15 inches and Freddie said, she wished she was out here to get some of that snow. Katie came out that year and Freddie did not come with her. So I went out and made 3 big snowballs and put them in a plastic bag and put them in the basement freezer. When Freddie came to visit in April, I gave him the frozen snowballs to take home with him.

  • Mildred Jenkins Mar 2000:

  • I remember Aunt Katie lived in the Clarksdale Housing Projects In Louisville in the early '40 when Uncle Freddie was in the Army and overseas. We used to go up there to see her a couple of times at week. While Uncle Freddie was overseas, she used to draw him sexy, pinup pictures. She could really draw and she would send them to him. He would show them to all the men he was stationed with over there. When Uncle Freddie came home from overseas, they started working for horse racing tracks. Started in PA went to FL, back and forth and eventually ended up in CA, where they lived from 1954 till they both passed away in 1979. Aunt Katie and Uncle Freddie had no children.
